frustration wells up in his throat. reports from PETALBURG have just arrived. however close his station in SLATEPORT may be, it’s not nearly enough to make up for rocket’s sudden appearance.

those closer to the area will have to deploy first. as the defender, war is more than just a show of strength. it is the art of mobilization. adaptation.

“all league forces south of mauville, converge on petalburg!”

the moment his comm cuts, fernando’s fist slams against his desk, rattling keyboard and paper alike. he curses freya morningstar, damns SOOTOPOLIS, and leaves his gym with a hasty adjustment of his SYGNA SUIT.

a projection of hoenn’s war front continues to glow in his office, numbers fluctuating as PETALBURG’s assigned number plummets lower and lower.

“tch.”





by the time her enters their airspace, dorian westcliff’s flames have started to spread. approaching from the south puts derek and elisabeth’s skirmish firmly between him and PETALBURG.

from a distance, fernando cannot make out much. he can see the constant sway of trees, the bright array of LIGHT OF RUIN, SOLAR BEAM, and even the short term fizzle of an ELECTRIC TERRAIN, which tells him all he needs to know.

“kino, nariya, hoffman, you’ve done well.”

a kick to his SALAMENCE’s side causes the pokemon to accelerate. with a tuck of its wings, the pokemon skydives toward the heavy movement. psychic energy shrouds the pokemon’s head as it prepares to break through anything in its way, using the ZEN HEADBUTT to cut through the vine walls and natural foliage.

with a speed that would make even lyune jealous, the SALAMENCE lands, oblivious to those around it. the resulting impact leaves a crater in its wake, kicking up a temporary dust cloud that obscures their arrival. only the green shimmer of the SLATEPORT GYM’s signature PROTECT radiates through.

a chance landing that positions them between the MELMETAL and elisabeth’s pending demise.

“reinforcements have arrived.”

fernando’s SALAMENCE flaps its wings, clearing their impromptu intrusion.

FERNANDO IS INDIFFERENT TO WO-CHIEN’S PLIGHT. to him, the pokemon is nothing more than just that: a pokemon. whatever sacrilege the beast is prophesied to bring about can be addressed when appropriate. if it means here and now, then so be it. let hoffman squish it like a bug.

however, his agency stops there.

for what fernando spies from underneath the cover of his headband is a loose tussle of twilight and broken dreams. he sees elysia cornered like a rat, frantic in distress, not unlike how she found him so many years ago.

“no!”

his SALAMENCE interjects once more, rearing its body to intercept the attack. a flash of teeth try to INTIMIDATE the pokemon to stand down, but it refrains from lashing out with a bottled up FLAMETHROWER. this restraint is rewarded with a firm punch to its shoulder, but for fernando, that’s a small price to pay.

“i’ll take it from here hoffman,” he deflects, well aware of the contradiction between his obligation and his curse.

he brandishes another pokeball from behind his pokemon, pairing it with his ZYGARDE. the pokemon snaps to attention when called, unaware of what lurks underground.
